This presentation provides a brief overview of cultural competence and the general principles of culturally competent service provision and care. Particular attention is paid to inclusion and context in culturally competent service provision. The implications of the National Enhanced Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards for mental health practitioners and organizations are outlined. Implementation of CLAS, including the principle standard and the three component themes - workforce development, language and communication, community engagement and accountability- are described and examples are provided. The need to address issues of implicit bias, stereotypes and micro-aggressions in client/clinician interactions in diverse dyads and groups is discussed as a part of the implementation of the CLAS standards. Initial efforts and strategies to recognize and address micro-aggressions and invalidations in multicultural settings are briefly discussed.
